Data center shift schedules, explained by someone who works them
Data centers run 24/7, so most technician jobs are shift work. Job postings almost never say which rotation you'll get. These are the common ones and the questions to ask.
The common rotations
- 2-2-3 (Pitman). 12-hour shifts: work 2, off 2, work 3, then flip. You work 7 of every 14 days, about 84 hours per two weeks, and every other weekend is a 3-day weekend.
- 4 on, 4 off (4x4). 12-hour shifts, four days on and four off. About 42 hours a week on average, with the days off moving through the calendar.
- Five 8s. Standard Monday–Friday or a fixed five-day block. More common for install, deployment and day-shift facilities roles.
- Four 10s. Four 10-hour days with three days off. Common on some deployment teams.
- Six-day stretches. Some sites run long six-day weeks during build-outs or staffing gaps. Ask whether that is temporary.
Questions to ask before you accept
- Which rotation is this role on, and is it fixed days, fixed nights, or rotating?
- Is there a night or weekend shift differential, and how much?
- How is overtime handled on a 2-2-3 or 4x4 schedule in this state?
- How often are techs held over or called in?
- Can I move to days later, and how long does that usually take?
